Dog Adopted After Owner Caught On-Cam Dumping Her In Southern Dallas

DALLAS, Texas – Cameras installed to capture illegal dog dumping in southeastern Dallas led to the arrest of a 62-year-old man who is accused of abandoning a 1-year-old dog.

Gorge Spears of Balch Springs turned himself in to authorities Monday on an animal cruelty charge and other charges. He is being held in the Dallas County Jail in lieu of $2,468.50 bail, which also includes traffic violations in McKinney.

This was the first time the cameras captured an incident of alleged animal cruelty that has led to an arrest, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wrote in a Facebook post.

The cameras were installed by the Dallas city marshal’s office near Teagarden and Dowdy Ferry roads in Rylie, the post said. The marshal’s office has posted an increasing number of cameras in popular illegal dumping grounds.

The SPCA of Dallas, received a tip about Spears on August 18 and was able to track him down. They were in contact with him for the last few weeks. The organization said he admitted to illegally dumping the dog to help his sister out.

A warrant was subsequently filed and Spears turned himself turned himself in to authorities after an arrest warrant was issued by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and the SPCA of Texas that same day. He was charged with cruelty to animals, a Class A misdemeanor.

The SPCA said, Claira-Belle the dog, is healthy and seems happy in her new home.
